Okaloosa County occupies a stretch of the western Florida Panhandle where Wright sits between the pine flatwoods of Eglin Air Force Base and Choctawhatchee Bay. Tornadoes here follow a Gulf Coast rhythm rather than a Plains one: humid Gulf of Mexico air streams inland through much of the year, cool-season fronts drag a strong jet stream overhead to spin up squall-line circulations even in midwinter, and decaying autumn tropical systems add rotation-rich rainbands.
That cool-season signature shows plainly in the NOAA Storm Prediction Center record for the area. An F3 tornado tore along a 12.8-mile path on December 25, 1964, injuring four people on Christmas Day. An F2 on January 5, 1962 killed one person and injured 30, while another F2 on December 10, 1967, roughly 1,000 yards wide, killed one and injured 50. A long-track F2 on May 26, 1973 traveled about 105.4 miles and claimed a life as well.
Recent decades have kept the threat alive without changing its character. An F2 struck on October 4, 1995, killing one person, and a brief F2 touched down on December 1, 1996. More recently, an EF2 hit on January 22, 2023, and an EF1 followed on May 10, 2025, compact storms typical of the coastal Panhandle.
