About Tornadoes in Aventura

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Aventura sits on a narrow coastal shelf in northeastern Miami-Dade County, wedged between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic near the Broward County line. The tornado dates here trace South Florida's two storm regimes: weak, short-lived spin-ups through the summer wet months, and stronger circulations arriving with cool-season fronts or with tropical weather in late summer and fall.

The cool season has brought damaging events. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tornado carved a 7.8-mile path as wide as 500 yards, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On March 27, 2003, an F2 up to 600 yards wide ran 6 miles, killing one person and injuring 14. An F2 on February 3, 1998 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. Spring and early summer have produced intense tornadoes as well: an F3 on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, and an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 along a 7.8-mile track.

In the EF era, an EF2 on October 19, 2011 did $4,000,000 in damage along a 1.11-mile path. A cluster of tornadoes, including an EF1, struck on September 27, 2022; EF1s touched down on February 16, 2016; and tornadoes returned to the area on February 18, 2024.
