Alafaya sits on the east side of metropolitan Orlando in Orange County, where Florida's two tornado regimes both leave their mark: brief, weak spin-ups from summer thunderstorms, and stronger tornadoes that arrive with the squall lines of winter and early-spring storm systems.
The cool-season storms have been the serious ones here. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado killed 11 people and injured 530 as it carved a 135.8-mile path across central Florida. On February 23, 1998, F3 tornadoes swept the greater Orlando area; one of them cut a 28-mile path, killing 25 people and injuring 150. An F2 on March 13, 1993 tracked some 30 miles, killing one person and injuring 60, and an F2 on January 8, 1978 injured 23 people along a 19.3-mile path.
Warm-season tornadoes around Alafaya tend to be brief and weak, though September 10, 2017 brought an EF2 that ran 1.55 miles on a path about 125 yards wide.
