About Tornadoes in Apopka

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Apopka occupies the northwest corner of Orange County, Florida, just northeast of Lake Apopka, and its tornado history splits along the seasons: brief touchdowns with summer thunderstorms, and far more dangerous strikes in the cool months, when strong fronts sweep across the central Florida peninsula.

On February 2, 2007, an EF3 tornado tore a track more than 26 miles long and 450 yards wide through the area, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and causing $98 million in property damage; a second EF3 that same day killed 8 people and injured 10 along a 10.5-mile path. On February 23, 1998, two F3 tornadoes struck: one killed 13 people and injured 36 on a 16-mile track, while the other killed 3 and injured 70 along an 18-mile path. The cool-season danger runs further back as well — an F2 on March 13, 1993 tracked 30 miles, killing one person and injuring 60, and an F2 on January 8, 1978 injured 23 along a 19.3-mile path.

The pattern has continued: on March 10, 2025, an EF2 carved a four-mile path 300 yards wide, doing $3.9 million in damage. By contrast, the warm-season events tend to be fleeting — a cluster of brief EF0 and EF1 tornadoes touched down on June 6 and 7, 2020, typical of the short-lived spin-ups the Apopka area sees in summer.
