About Tornadoes in Weston

This overview was written August 10, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Weston occupies flat, low-lying ground at the western edge of Broward County, Florida, where suburban lakes and cul-de-sacs give way almost immediately to Everglades sawgrass. Across that open terrain, an F3 tornado carved a 7.8-mile path on April 10, 1956, injuring 20 people, and another F3 followed on June 18, 1959, injuring 77 along a 12.7-mile track. Late winter produced an F3 on February 23, 1965 and an F2 on February 19, 1968. On March 2, 1980, an F3 some 500 yards wide killed 1 person and injured 33, and a long-track F2 ran 52.5 miles across the region on March 17, 1983. More recently, an EF2 touched down on October 19, 2011, and a tornado traced 4.69 miles near the city on October 9, 2024.

The seasonal rhythm behind these storms is distinctly Floridian. From late spring through summer, Gulf and Atlantic moisture fuels sea-breeze collisions over the peninsula, spinning up brief tornadoes, while tropical systems add an autumn pulse — the setting for the October events. In winter and early spring, jet-stream disturbances drive squall lines ahead of cold fronts, the pattern behind Weston's February and March strikes. The NOAA Storm Prediction Center's storm database underlies the event list shown elsewhere on this page.
