Sitting on the Pinellas peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, the community spends its summers under an airmass primed for afternoon thunderstorms, and the boundaries where gulf and bay breezes converge can spin up brief tornadoes and landfalling waterspouts. When the pattern flips in fall, winter, and spring, jet-stream disturbances and squall lines crossing the Gulf supply the wind shear that summer lacks, and those months have produced the area's more dangerous tornadoes.
