The area's defining event came on April 4, 1966, when an F4 tornado tore across the peninsula on a path roughly 135 miles long, killing 11 people and injuring 530. An F1 injured 55 people as it swept through on February 19, 1974. On October 19, 2019, an EF2 carved a track about 11 miles long and up to 525 yards across. Even Christmas Day has produced a tornado here: an F2 struck on December 25, 2006.
