Warm, humid air seldom leaves the neighborhood of University Park. The community occupies Florida's flat Gulf coastal plain, where sea breezes off the Gulf of Mexico collide with boundaries drifting across the peninsula, and where winter cold fronts and a dipping subtropical jet stream supply wind shear that summer usually lacks. Add the rainbands of passing tropical cyclones, and this low, water-bordered terrain, with little rough ground to weaken an arriving circulation, gives tornadoes multiple routes in.
This area's file with the NOAA Storm Prediction Center mixes brief spin-ups with genuinely damaging storms. An F3 crossed the area on April 10, 1956, injuring 20 people along a 7.8-mile path roughly 200 yards wide. Another F3 arrived on June 18, 1959, tracking 12.7 miles and leaving 77 people hurt. Cool-season systems hit hard too: an F2 on February 19, 1968 injured 21 people. On March 27, 2003, an F2 killed one person and injured 14 while carving a swath around 600 yards across.
