Temple Terrace occupies flat, sandy ground along a bend of the Hillsborough River on the northeastern side of the Tampa Bay urban area, and trained observers have been documenting tornadoes across this corner of Florida since the middle of the last century. Geography does the city few favors: the peninsula is nearly level from the Gulf shoreline inland, waterspouts can move ashore intact, and the smooth terrain lets a circulation hold together once it is over land.
The benchmark event in the local record came on April 4, 1966, when an F4 tornado carved a 135.8-mile track across the peninsula, killing 11 people and injuring 530; an F2 followed a roughly parallel course the same day. On October 3, 1992, an F3 struck the Tampa area, killing 3 people and injuring 75. An EF2 on December 16, 2020, tracked 13.11 miles through the region, and another EF2 touched down on October 12, 2023.
