In Tallahassee, tornado weather tends to announce itself in late winter and early spring, before Florida's steamy summer pattern sets in. Vigorous cold fronts still dive off the continent in those months, and when they meet humid air streaming inland off the Gulf of Mexico and over the Big Bend's red-clay hills, the atmosphere can erupt into squall lines and supercells. A strong subtropical jet stream overhead often supplies the shear those storms need to rotate. Autumn carries its own risk, as decaying tropical systems crossing the Panhandle occasionally spawn brief tornadoes.
The local record kept by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center reaches back across generations. An F2 tornado touched down near the capital on January 28, 1952.
