The contrast arrives on outbreak days, when a cool-season jet stream digs across the northern Gulf of Mexico and drives squall lines through west-central Florida with rotating cells embedded in the line. Warm, humid air is available here through much of the year, so when strong wind shear overspreads the peninsula — often during El Niño winters — the tornado threat climbs abruptly. The record kept by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center captures both moods: patient decades interrupted by genuinely dangerous days.
