Seminole, Florida, can pass through long quiet stretches — whole seasons when severe weather amounts to routine sea-breeze thunderstorms — and then face a day when tornadoes cross the Pinellas peninsula in earnest. That contrast is built into the local climate. Wedged between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, the city sits in deeply humid air for much of the year; summer sea-breeze collisions can spin up brief funnels and waterspouts that come ashore, while cool-season fronts, aided by a strong subtropical jet stream in El Niño winters, occasionally drive organized supercells across the county.
