On April 4, 1966, a long-track F4 tornado tore across the Florida peninsula along a 135.8-mile path, killing 11 people and injuring 530 in and around Saint Cloud. The geography that made such a track possible is ordinary here: the city occupies flat, lake-strewn terrain in the peninsula's interior, where sea breezes pushing inland from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic collide on warm afternoons. With little relief in the landscape to break up those converging moist airmasses, thunderstorms form readily and can acquire the rotation that spawns tornadoes.
Cool-season systems bring a different threat. On February 23, 1998, an F3 tornado killed 25 people and injured 150 along a 28-mile path as jet-stream energy crossing the Gulf met humid air already parked over central Florida. Earlier, an F3 tracked 8 miles through the area on March 19, 1981, and an F2 injured 18 people on December 27, 1997.
