On April 15, 1958, an F4 tornado spun up briefly near town yet injured 7 people. A defining afternoon came on April 4, 1966, when an F4 tore across the peninsula along a roughly 135-mile track; 11 people died and 530 were hurt. An F3 on May 4, 1978 left 3 dead and 94 injured, and twin strikes on October 3, 1992 brought an F2 and an F3, the latter fatal to 3 people. In this century, an EF2 on January 17, 2016 took 2 lives, and an EF2 on December 16, 2020 traced a 13-mile damage path.
