Moisture-laden air off the Gulf of Mexico and Charlotte Harbor gives Punta Gorda Isles the raw fuel for rotating storms through much of the year. Colliding summer sea breezes, the outer rainbands of landfalling tropical cyclones, and cool-season fronts that import stronger wind shear each supply a different trigger, so a tornado here can spin up from an ordinary afternoon thunderstorm as readily as from a hurricane brushing the coast.
Occasionally those ingredients align with grim results. An F3 tornado struck the Punta Gorda area on March 17, 1985, killing two people and injuring forty-five along a track of roughly three miles. An earlier F2 on July 30, 1968, also killed two people despite covering very little ground, a reminder that even compact Florida tornadoes can be dangerous.
