Pompano Beach lies on the low Atlantic Coastal Ridge of Florida's southeastern shore, hemmed in by the warm Gulf Stream offshore and the flat sawgrass plain of the Everglades to the west. Tornadoes have crossed this ground repeatedly. An F3 carved a 7.8-mile path through the area on April 10, 1956, injuring 20 people, and another F3 tracked 12.7 miles on June 18, 1959, injuring 77. An F3 on February 23, 1965, injured 6 along its path. On March 2, 1980, an F3 with a damage swath 500 yards wide killed a person and injured 33. Later entries were weaker but persistent. An F2 traveled 52.5 miles on March 17, 1983, and another F2 tracked 21 miles on February 3, 1998. An EF2 struck on October 19, 2011, and an EF2 injured 2 people on September 28, 2022.
The terrain explains the pattern. The peninsula is flat and low, so Atlantic sea-breeze fronts sweep inland unobstructed and collide with moist air drifting east from the Gulf of Mexico, wringing out storms that can briefly spin up along the boundary. Waterspouts born over the Gulf Stream sometimes come ashore as weak tornadoes, while winter squall lines riding the subtropical jet and rain bands from tropical systems supply stronger circulations.
