Set among pine flatwoods, cypress strands, and reclaimed wetland prairie south of Kissimmee, Poinciana occupies the low, lake-dotted interior of the Florida peninsula. The peninsula is narrow enough here that sea breezes off the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic regularly collide overhead, and that collision sets the seasonal rhythm of local tornado weather: humid summer afternoons favor brief spin-ups along merging boundaries, while winter and early spring — especially when a strengthened subtropical jet stream rides atop El Niño-warmed waters — send organized squall lines and supercells sweeping across the state.
Those cool-season systems dominate the darker entries in local history. An F4 carved a 135.8-mile track across central Florida on April 4, 1966, killing 11 people and injuring 530. On February 23, 1998, an F3 struck the Kissimmee corridor overnight, killing 25 residents and injuring 150, many of them in manufactured housing. Another F3 crossed the area on March 19, 1981.
