Low, flat, and barely above sea level, Pinewood occupies the limestone plain of southeastern Florida, with the Everglades spreading west of the city and Biscayne Bay close by to the east. That setting drives its tornado climate. Because the terrain offers little to deflect or weaken low-level winds, sea breezes push inland from the Atlantic and Gulf coasts on warm afternoons and collide over the peninsula, focusing thunderstorms in air loaded with tropical moisture. Waterspouts drifting ashore from the bay, rainbands spiraling out of passing tropical cyclones, and winter squall lines driven across the state by a strong subtropical jet round out the threats, so a tornado here can arrive in nearly any month.
The historical record compiled by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center reflects that variety. An F3 carved a 12.7-mile track through the area on June 18, 1959, injuring 77 people. An F3 on March 2, 1980 left one resident dead and 33 others hurt. A long-track F2 swept the region on February 3, 1998, during a stormy El Niño winter.
