Pembroke Pines lies in Broward County, on the flat coastal plain of southeastern Florida, where sea-breeze thunderstorms, squall lines, and passing tropical weather can all spawn tornadoes. Many touchdowns near the city have come with the summer storm season — brief spin-ups in June, July, and August — while some of the area's more dangerous tornadoes have arrived with winter and early-spring fronts.
An F3 tornado struck on March 2, 1980, killing one person and injuring 33 as it carved a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide and caused $27.5 million in property damage. Decades earlier, an F3 on June 18, 1959 injured 77 people along a 12.7-mile track, and an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20. On March 27, 2003, an F2 killed one person and injured 14 along a six-mile path that spread to 600 yards wide, and an F2 on February 3, 1998 tracked 21 miles through the area.
Tornadoes have continued to touch down in recent years. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 did $4 million in property damage along a short path; EF1 tornadoes struck on February 16, 2016, and again on September 27, 2022, when a cluster of tornadoes crossed the area in a single day; and an EF0 was confirmed on January 6, 2024.
