About Tornadoes in Parkland

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Parkland lies in northern Broward County, where southeast Florida's suburbs press against the Everglades, and the tornadoes documented around the city span every season of the year.

Many of the stronger events have arrived with late-winter and spring weather systems. An F3 tornado on April 10, 1956, tracked 7.8 miles and injured 20 people, and another F3 on February 23, 1965, ran 5.7 miles and injured six. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tore a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. The cool season has also produced long-track F2 tornadoes: one on March 17, 1983, stayed on the ground for 52.5 miles, and another on February 3, 1998, tracked 21 miles.

Summer brings a different pattern — quick, weak touchdowns scattered through the June-to-August wet season — though an EF2 on August 19, 2008, traveled 2.72 miles and caused $1.25 million in damage. Fall carries tropical-season risk: tornadoes struck on September 27 and 28, 2022, including an EF2 on the 28th that traveled nearly 7 miles and injured two people. And on October 9, 2024, an EF3 tornado tracked 32.89 miles on a path up to 457 yards wide, injuring seven people and causing $81.45 million in damage.
