Panama City sits on St. Andrew Bay in Bay County, along the Gulf coast of the Florida Panhandle, where tornadoes most often arrive with cool-season storm systems in winter and early spring, with additional activity in the late-summer and fall months.

On December 10, 1967, an F3 tornado struck the area, cutting a 7.1-mile path, killing one person and injuring 50. On January 12, 1975, an F2 tornado tracked 168.5 miles at up to 100 yards wide, causing one death and 33 injuries along the way.

More recent years have brought damaging tornadoes as well. On January 9, 2024, several tornadoes moved through the Panama City area: an EF3 carved a 5.2-mile path up to 550 yards wide and did $15,350,000 in property damage, while an EF2 that same day stayed on the ground for 12.89 miles at up to 600 yards wide, injuring two people. Springtime has also produced strong tornadoes, including an EF2 on April 10, 2021 and another EF2 on March 18, 2022, each causing $500,000 in damage. And on October 27, 2025, an EF1 tornado injured 10 people along a 1.22-mile path through the area.
