About Tornadoes in Palm Valley

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Palm Valley lies along the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Johns County, on Florida's northeast Atlantic coast, where tornadoes have spun up from warm-season thunderstorms and tropical systems as well as from cool-season fronts.

An F3 tornado struck on April 15, 1958, injuring 9 people along a 3.6-mile path and causing $275,000 in property damage. Another F3 followed on February 7, 1971, carving a 13.1-mile track roughly 200 yards wide. F2 tornadoes have hit the area as well, including on June 8, 1957, on May 12, 1974 — when 2 people were injured — and on March 29, 2001, when an F2 tracked 12 miles. Even a small tornado here can turn tragic: an F0 on June 11, 2001 killed 1 person despite a path of just 0.1 miles.

Late summer and early fall, the heart of hurricane season, have produced repeated flurries: tornadoes touched down on September 5, 6, and 7, 2004, on September 10, 2017, and on September 11 and 26, 2023. The cooler months bring their own risk — EF1 tornadoes struck on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020, and an EF1 hit on February 8, 2017. Activity has continued recently, with an EF1 on June 28, 2024 and an EF0 on May 29, 2025.
