About Tornadoes in Palm City

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Palm City sits in Martin County on Florida's Treasure Coast, where tornadoes arrive by two different routes: warm-season storms tied to tropical systems and the sea breeze, and sharp winter fronts that sweep down the peninsula. The winter threat is real here — on January 24, 1979, an F3 tornado carved a 9.6-mile path through the area.

The area has known deadly storms for generations. An F3 tornado on September 18, 1954, killed two people and injured two others. On April 15, 1958, an F3 tracked 14.8 miles and injured 20 people, and on October 19, 1958, another F3 ran 20.2 miles across the region, killing one person and injuring 24.

October 9, 2024, brought a barrage. An EF3 that day tore a 21.24-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing six people and causing $514 million in property damage. A second EF3 injured seven people along a 32.89-mile track, and EF2 and EF1 tornadoes touched down across the area the same day.

Much of what spins up around Palm City, though, is brief and weak — warm-season F0s and EF0s, like the tornado that touched down on May 12, 2025.
