Pace sits in Santa Rosa County in Florida's western Panhandle, close enough to the Gulf that its tornadoes arrive with both cool-season storm systems and summertime tropical moisture. The area's history includes destructive events: on March 31, 1962, an F3 tornado cut a 6.9-mile swath as much as 440 yards wide, killing 17 people and injuring 100. Another F3 on February 7, 1971 injured 112 and caused $2,750,000 in property damage, and on May 26, 1973 an F2 tracked 105.4 miles, killing one person.
The cool season has stayed dangerous in the modern era. On February 15, 2016, an EF3 ran 16.45 miles through the area, and on February 24, 2016 another EF3 cut a 2.99-mile track about 300 yards wide, injuring 3 people and doing $22,000,000 in damage.
Warm-season tornadoes are part of life here as well. An EF2 on June 16, 2023 tracked 8.58 miles with a width of 450 yards, and an EF2 on May 10, 2024 traveled 23.96 miles at up to 1,000 yards wide.
