Ormond Beach lies along the Halifax River on Volusia County's Atlantic coast, and its tornado history splits along Florida's two severe-weather seasons: quick, usually weak tornadoes in the warm months, when sea-breeze storms and tropical systems dominate, and more dangerous tornadoes riding squall lines through the cool season.
Cool-season systems have produced violent, deadly tornadoes here. On February 2, 2007, an EF3 tornado carved a 26.03-mile path as wide as 450 yards through the area, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and inflicting $98 million in property damage. Other cool-season strikes include an F3 on November 2, 1997 that injured 32 people along a three-mile track, an F2 on February 23, 1998 that killed one person on an eight-mile path, and two F2 tornadoes on December 25, 2006 that injured residents on Christmas Day.
