Ojus sits in northeastern Miami-Dade County, on South Florida's flat Atlantic coastal plain, where tornadoes can be spun up by summer sea-breeze thunderstorms, by tropical systems passing in late summer and fall, and by the squall lines that sweep the peninsula in winter and early spring.
Several intense tornadoes have arrived with that cooler-season pattern. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tore a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On March 27, 2003, an F2 killed one person and injured 14 along a six-mile track that spread to 600 yards wide, and on February 3, 1998, an F2 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. Warm-season storms have produced dangerous tornadoes as well: an F3 on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, and an EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in damage along a 1.11-mile path.
Far more often, though, tornadoes near Ojus are brief and weak — quick spin-ups along sea-breeze boundaries and passing storm bands — like the EF0 touchdowns of September 27, 2022, or the cluster of EF0 and EF1 tornadoes on February 16, 2016. Even so, the dates above show this corner of Miami-Dade can produce tornadoes strong enough to destroy property and take lives.
