About Tornadoes in Ocoee

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Ocoee sits in western Orange County on the southeastern side of Lake Apopka, just west of Orlando, in a stretch of central Florida where tornadoes arrive in two very different moods. Most come with the summer thunderstorm season and stay brief and weak — EF0s like those of July 8, 2017 and June 6, 2020 — but the cooler months have brought violent, long-tracked storms across this part of the peninsula.

An F4 swept through central Florida on April 4, 1966, killing 11 people and injuring 530 along a track that stretched 135.8 miles. On February 23, 1998, F3 tornadoes raked the region; one traveled 28 miles with a path up to 250 yards wide, killing 25 people and injuring 150. Other cool-season strikes fit the same pattern: an F2 on January 8, 1978 injured 23 people along a 19.3-mile track, and an F2 on March 13, 1993 killed one person and injured 60 as it traveled 30 miles.

The threat remains current. On March 10, 2025, an EF2 carved a four-mile path up to 300 yards wide through the area, causing $3.9 million in property damage, and an EF0 followed on May 26, 2025.
