About Tornadoes in Oakleaf Plantation

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Oakleaf Plantation, a master-planned community in Clay County on the southwestern edge of metropolitan Jacksonville, sits in a corner of northeast Florida where tornadoes arrive in two distinct moods: brief, weak spin-ups from summer thunderstorms and tropical weather, and better-organized twisters riding cool-season and springtime squall lines.

Stronger tornadoes have struck the area more than once. On May 12, 1974, an F2 tornado tracked 17.5 miles, injuring one person and causing $275,000 in damage, while a second F2 that same day cut a 4.3-mile path and injured two more. F2 tornadoes also touched down on June 8, 1957, and February 7, 1971, and on March 29, 2001, an F2 stayed on the ground for 12 miles. A far smaller storm turned deadly that same year: an F0 on June 11, 2001, killed one person despite a path of just 0.1 mile.

Warm-season activity tends to come in bursts, as when weak tornadoes touched down on three consecutive days, September 5 through 7, 2004, and when EF0s spun up on September 26, 2023. Cool-season outbreaks have continued as well, with EF1 tornadoes on February 8, 2017, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020, and on February 4, 2024. More recently, an EF0 touched down on May 29, 2025.
