About Tornadoes in Oakland Park

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Oakland Park lies in the low, densely built coastal corridor of Broward County, a few miles inland from the Atlantic, and its tornado history follows South Florida's rhythms: touchdowns here have arrived with winter and early-spring frontal squalls as well as with summer thunderstorms and autumn tropical weather.

Some of those storms have been genuinely dangerous. An F3 tornado struck on April 10, 1956, injuring 20 people and causing $2.75 million in damage along a 7.8-mile path. Another F3 on June 18, 1959 injured 77 people on a 12.7-mile track. On March 2, 1980, an F3 killed one person, injured 33, and caused $27.5 million in property damage along a path that widened to 500 yards.

The modern era has produced damaging tornadoes as well. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in property damage on a path just over a mile long. In late September 2022, tornadoes touched down on both the 27th and 28th, including an EF2 on September 28 that injured two people over a 6.98-mile track. Touchdowns have continued since, in April 2023, on February 18, 2024, and again on October 9, 2024.
