About Tornadoes in North Miami

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

North Miami sits on the flat coastal plain of northeastern Miami-Dade County, hemmed by Biscayne Bay to the east, and the tornadoes in its history follow South Florida's rhythms: June afternoons at the start of the wet season, September and October in the heart of the tropical calendar, and squall lines sweeping through on winter fronts.

An F3 tornado struck on June 18, 1959, injuring 77 people along a 12.7-mile path up to 333 yards wide. On March 2, 1980, another F3 carved a 7.8-mile track as much as 500 yards across, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. Winter and early-spring setups have produced serious tornadoes here too: an F2 tracked 21 miles through the area on February 3, 1998, and on March 27, 2003 an F2 up to 600 yards wide killed one person and injured 14.

More recently, an EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in damage along a compact 1.11-mile path, EF1 tornadoes touched down on February 16, 2016, and tornadoes were recorded again on September 27, 2022 and February 18, 2024 — cool-season and tropical-season dates that underline how often this corner of Florida sees tornadoes well outside the classic springtime window.
