North Fort Myers sits on the north bank of the Caloosahatchee River in Lee County, in a corner of Southwest Florida where tornadoes arrive with summer thunderstorms and, in the cooler months, with strong frontal systems sweeping in off the Gulf.

Damaging tornadoes here are nothing new. An F2 on October 31, 1960, killed one person, and an F2 tornado that struck on June 18, 1982, ran an eight-mile path, causing one death, four injuries, and $275,000 in property damage. On August 9, 1986, another F2 injured twelve people and did $2,750,000 in damage along a track about 200 yards wide, and on June 21, 2006, an F2 tracked three miles and injured three people.

Winter systems have hit hard as well. On January 9, 2016, an EF2 tore a 3.35-mile path through the area, injuring three and causing $2,000,000 in damage. On January 16, 2022, an EF2 ran just over seven miles and left $10,000,000 in damage. More recently, on October 9, 2024, an EF2 traveled more than sixteen miles along a path as wide as 500 yards, causing $500,000 in damage, while other, weaker tornadoes touched down in the area that same day.
