Norland lies in northern Miami-Dade County, on the flat, densely built coastal plain of South Florida, where tornadoes arrive on two very different kinds of days: quick spin-ups out of summertime sea-breeze storms and tropical weather, and more dangerous storms riding late-winter and spring fronts.
The frontal season has repeatedly brought damaging tornadoes to the area. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tore a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. On March 27, 2003, an F2 cut a six-mile swath as much as 600 yards wide; one person died and 14 were injured. On February 3, 1998, an F2 stayed on the ground for 21 miles. Earlier generations saw serious warm-season storms as well: an F3 on June 18, 1959 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, and an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 along a 7.8-mile path.
More recently, an EF2 struck on October 19, 2011, carving a 1.11-mile path and causing $4 million in property damage. Summer, meanwhile, tends to deliver briefer, weaker touchdowns — EF1s hit on August 14, 2008 and on September 10, 2017 — short-lived storms that can still do real harm in neighborhoods as closely settled as Norland's.
