New Port Richey sits on the Gulf Coast of west-central Florida, in Pasco County, where tornadoes arrive in two very different ways: brief spin-ups from summer sea-breeze storms and tropical moisture, and stronger, longer-tracked tornadoes spawned by squall lines crossing the Gulf ahead of cool-season fronts.
An F4 tornado struck on April 4, 1966, killing 11 people and injuring 530 as it tore a 135.8-mile track up to 300 yards wide, causing $27.5 million in property damage. The cool season has produced other destructive events for the area: an F1 on February 19, 1974 tracked 45.9 miles and injured 55 people, and an F2 on December 25, 2006 injured two as it cut a path through the region on Christmas Day. Spring storms have turned deadly as well: an F3 on May 4, 1978 killed three people and injured 94 along a 1.5-mile path.
The modern era has kept both patterns alive. EF1 tornadoes touched down on November 2, 2018, and an EF2 on December 16, 2020 carved a 13.11-mile path and caused $16 million in damage. Storms on October 12, 2023 produced an EF2 that ran 4.97 miles and caused $500,000 in damage, and an EF1 touched down on June 25, 2025.
