On February 7, 1971, an F3 tornado cut a mile-long path through the area, injuring 112 people and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. Decades later the pattern repeated: on February 24, 2016, an EF3 carved 2.99 miles at up to 300 yards wide, injuring 3 people and inflicting $22,000,000 in damage, with an EF1 touching down nearby the same day.
Spring has been just as dangerous. On March 31, 1962, an F3 tracked 6.9 miles at widths reaching 440 yards, killing 17 people, injuring 100, and causing $2,750,000 in damage; an F2 and an F1 also struck that day.
