Miramar lies in southern Broward County, on the flat coastal plain between the Everglades and the Atlantic, where South Florida's sea-breeze thunderstorms and passing tropical systems can spin up tornadoes with little warning. Many of the area's tornadoes have been brief and weak, but the city's history holds serious exceptions.
On March 2, 1980, an F3 tornado tore a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27,500,000 in property damage. Earlier generations saw comparable violence: an F3 on June 18, 1959 stayed on the ground for 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, and an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 along a 7.8-mile track.
The cool season carries risk here too. An F2 on February 3, 1998 traveled 21 miles, and on March 27, 2003 an F2 up to 600 yards wide ran six miles, killing one person and injuring 14. February 16, 2016 brought a burst of tornadoes to the area, among them EF1s.
Damaging tornadoes have continued in recent years. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4,000,000 in damage along a 1.11-mile path, tornadoes including an EF1 touched down on September 27, 2022, and an EF0 was confirmed on January 6, 2024.
