About Tornadoes in Midway

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Midway sits in Gadsden County, in Florida's Big Bend just west of Tallahassee, a stretch of the Panhandle where Gulf moisture meets strong cool-season fronts and tornadoes have touched down in every month of the year.

The area's violent tornadoes have often arrived in the cooler months. On March 31, 1962, an F3 tornado carved a 6.9-mile path through the area, killing 17 people, injuring 100, and causing $2.75 million in property damage. On February 7, 1971, another F3 injured 112 people, and on December 10, 1967, an F2 with a damage path 1,000 yards wide killed one person and injured 50. A long-track F2 on May 26, 1973 traveled 105.4 miles and also claimed a life.

Severe tornadoes have continued into the modern era. On February 24, 2016, an EF3 injured three people along a 2.99-mile path and caused $22 million in damage, with an EF1 confirmed the same day. On June 16, 2023, an EF2 tracked 8.58 miles through the area. Weaker tornadoes remain a regular part of life here: EF1s struck on March 31, 2022, and again on April 10, 2024, and activity carried into 2025 with EF1 tornadoes on February 11 and May 10 and an EF0 on June 17.
