Miami Gardens sits on the flat, densely developed coastal plain of northern Miami-Dade County, just below the Broward County line, and tornadoes here follow South Florida's two-season rhythm: quick, weak touchdowns in the humid summer months, and occasionally far more serious storms when cool-season weather systems sweep across the peninsula.
That cooler stretch of the calendar has produced several of the area's memorable events. An F3 tornado struck on March 2, 1980, carving a 7.8-mile path as wide as 500 yards; it killed one person, injured 33, and caused $27.5 million in property damage. On February 3, 1998, an F2 stayed on the ground for a 21-mile track, and on March 27, 2003, an F2 up to 600 yards across killed one person and injured 14 along a six-mile path. In the spring, an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 people along a 7.8-mile path of its own.
The warm season has turned dangerous as well: an F3 on June 18, 1959 injured 77 people over a 12.7-mile track.
