Miami's tornado risk is dominated by tropical cyclones and tropical-cyclone-adjacent setups. Tornado Alley supercells are rare here; instead, Miami-Dade and Broward counties get tornadoes embedded in hurricane rainbands, in the warm sector of cold-frontal passages that occasionally reach south Florida in winter, and from the rare strong supercell during the late spring transition. Most Miami-area tornadoes are EF0 to EF2, short-lived, and difficult to see because they're embedded in heavy tropical rainfall.
The hurricane connection
South Florida tornadoes overwhelmingly cluster around landfalling tropical systems. Hurricane Andrew (August 24, 1992) produced tornado-rated damage at multiple sites in southern Miami-Dade as the right-front quadrant of the storm passed over Homestead and Cutler Ridge — though the Andrew damage is hard to disentangle from the Category 5 sustained winds. Hurricane Wilma (October 24, 2005) spawned multiple tornadoes across south Florida including in Miami-Dade. Hurricane Ian (September 28, 2022), which made landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast, produced confirmed tornadoes in eastern Miami-Dade as the system tracked across the state.
Notable non-hurricane events
The February 6, 2024 Cooper City/Pembroke Pines EF2 tornado tracked through southwestern Broward County during a strong cold-frontal passage, damaging homes in Cooper City and the Pembroke Pines area. The February 2024 event was one of the strongest non-hurricane Miami-area tornadoes in recent record and produced an unusually long path for south Florida. The January 23, 2017 South Bay area EF1 swarm dropped multiple weak tornadoes across western Miami-Dade and Broward during a winter severe-weather setup with strong vertical wind profiles.
The April 26, 2023 Doral EF0 tornado — central Miami-Dade — caused significant damage to a section of the Miami International Mall during peak afternoon hours, with no fatalities but several injuries. The April 2023 event was particularly notable for occurring during what most residents would consider an unremarkable thunderstorm afternoon, reinforcing the importance of taking warnings seriously even when the broader weather setup doesn't look severe.

South Florida's tornado-track density is highest in western Miami-Dade and Broward (Pembroke Pines, Cooper City, Plantation, Sunrise, Coral Springs) — the inland suburbs receive more tornadoes per unit area than the coastal cities, partly because storm motion typically brings systems from the west and partly because the Atlantic's stabilizing influence on the immediate coast suppresses near-surface convergence. Homestead and southern Miami-Dade are particularly vulnerable to hurricane-related tornadoes given their position on typical landfalling-storm tracks.

Miami's preparedness culture is hurricane-centric — most residents are well-prepared for hurricanes but less primed for sudden tornadoes during winter cold-frontal passages or non-tropical setups. Florida building codes (post-Hurricane Andrew) produce some of the strongest residential structures in the country, which provides tornado protection up to roughly EF2 winds. However, mobile homes — common in older Miami-Dade neighborhoods including parts of Homestead and Florida City — provide essentially no protection.
The biggest Miami tornado-risk gaps are during hurricane events (when residents are sheltered for hurricane winds but may not be in their tornado-safe interior room) and during winter cold fronts (when residents associate winter weather with cold rather than severe storms).
