Margate sits amid the dense western suburbs of Broward County, on southeast Florida's flat coastal plain, and its tornado history follows the local calendar: brief touchdowns through the summer wet season, tornadoes at the height of hurricane season in September and October, and cool-season storms from February into April that have produced strong, long-tracked tornadoes.
An F3 that struck on March 2, 1980 carved a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27,500,000 in property damage. Other cool-season strikes followed a similar script: an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 people along its own 7.8-mile track, an F3 on February 23, 1965 ran 5.7 miles and injured 6, and an F2 on February 19, 1968 traveled 5.7 miles and injured 21.
Autumn carries its own threat. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4,000,000 in damage along a 1.11-mile path, an EF2 on September 28, 2022 tracked 6.98 miles and injured 2, and on October 9, 2024 an EF3 tore along a 32.89-mile path up to 457 yards wide, injuring 7 and causing $81,450,000 in property damage.
