About Tornadoes in Marco Island

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Marco Island anchors the southern end of Collier County's Gulf coast, a low barrier island where the mangrove maze of the Ten Thousand Islands begins. Its tornadoes are creatures of the subtropics: quick spin-ups from summer sea-breeze storms, waterspouts pushed ashore, and circulations embedded in the tropical systems of late summer and fall, with winter cold fronts adding occasional twisters of their own.

A grim stretch came in November 1968. On November 9, 1968, an F2 tornado carved a 45.6-mile path as much as 100 yards wide, killing two people, injuring 17, and doing $27,500 in property damage. Two days later, on November 11, 1968, a second F2 tracked 65.4 miles on a ribbon-thin path just 17 yards across, injuring three and causing $275,000 in damage. An earlier F2, on May 10, 1962, was far briefer, covering only 0.3 miles yet still injuring one person.

More recent events have stayed toward the weaker end of the scale, arriving in the seasons the island knows well: an EF1 on September 9, 2017, at the height of hurricane season; EF0 tornadoes on January 16, 2022, in the depths of the winter dry season; and an EF0 on September 26, 2024, as another September brought unsettled tropical weather to Southwest Florida.
