Maitland sits among the lakes of Orange County just north of Orlando, and its tornado history runs in two distinct modes. Summer brings brief, generally weak touchdowns — EF0 and EF1 tornadoes struck the area on June 6 and 7, 2020, and EF0s followed on June 6, 2024 and May 26, 2025, each typical of the quick spin-ups central Florida sees in its wet season.
The cooler months have produced far more dangerous storms. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado tore across central Florida on a 135.8-mile track up to 300 yards wide, killing 11 people, injuring 530, and causing $27,500,000 in damage as it crossed the Orlando area.
