Little Havana sits just west of downtown Miami in Miami-Dade County, on low, flat terrain a few miles from Biscayne Bay, where sea-breeze thunderstorms and tropical weather drive much of the neighborhood's tornado activity in late spring and summer, while winter and early-spring fronts have also brought damaging storms.
The area's history includes intense tornadoes. On June 18, 1959, an F3 tornado tore a 12.7-mile path through the area, injuring 77 people. An F3 on April 10, 1956, injured 20 people along a 7.8-mile track, and an F3 on February 23, 1965, injured six along a 5.7-mile path. Cooler months have turned dangerous as well: an F2 on February 19, 1968, injured 21 people, and an F2 on February 3, 1998, stayed on the ground for 21 miles. On March 27, 2003, an F2 tornado up to 600 yards wide killed one person and injured 14 along a six-mile path.
An F1 that moved through the Miami metro area on May 12, 1997, injured 12 people along an eight-mile track. More recent touchdowns include EF1 tornadoes on September 10, 2017, an EF1 on September 27, 2022, and EF0 tornadoes on February 18, 2024 — a reminder that even in a dense urban neighborhood like Little Havana, tornadoes remain a recurring hazard in every season.
