Leisure City lies in southern Miami-Dade County, on the low coastal plain between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades, where sea-breeze thunderstorms, tropical systems, and winter fronts have all spun up tornadoes nearby.
On June 18, 1959, an F3 tornado carved a 12.7-mile path up to 333 yards wide through the area, injuring 77 people and causing $2,750,000 in property damage. Early summer has produced other significant events as well, including an F2 on June 22, 1971 that tracked two miles.
The cool season carries its own risk in South Florida. An F2 on December 20, 1973 ran 7.6 miles and injured 9 people; an F2 on February 3, 1998 tracked 21 miles; and an F2 on November 4, 1998 injured 20 people along a 12-mile path. On March 27, 2003, a deadly F2 up to 600 yards wide moved through the area, killing one person and injuring 14.
The fall tropical months have brought more recent touchdowns, including an EF0 on September 9, 2017 and an EF1 on October 9, 2024, while late spring produced an EF1 on May 25, 2020 and an EF0 on May 25, 2023.
