About Tornadoes in Leesburg

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Leesburg lies in Lake County near the center of the Florida peninsula, between Lake Harris and Lake Griffin, and its tornado history carries a pronounced cool-season signature. On February 2, 2007, an EF3 tornado tore a path 26 miles long and up to 450 yards wide through the area, killing 13 people, injuring 51, and doing $98 million in property damage; a second EF3 on the same date killed 8 and injured 10 along a 10.5-mile track. February had turned deadly here before: an F3 on February 23, 1998 ripped along an 18-mile track, killing 3 and injuring 70, while on February 6, 1975 an F1 stayed on the ground for nearly 55 miles. Other winter and early-spring storms have hit hard as well — an F2 on January 7, 1995, some 440 yards wide at its peak, killed 1 person and injured 20, and an F2 on March 13, 1993 covered 30 miles, killing 1 and injuring 60.

Mid-spring brings its own risks to the area: an F2 on April 19, 1978 injured 14 along a 5.6-mile path, and an F2 on April 15, 1987 killed 1 and injured 7. Summer tornadoes around Leesburg, by contrast, have tended to be brief and weak, like the EF0 touchdowns of June 6 and 7, 2020. Most recently, a tornado touched down in the area on May 13, 2025.
