About Tornadoes in Lauderhill

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Lauderhill sits in the flat, densely built center of Broward County, a few miles inland from the Atlantic, where sea-breeze thunderstorms, tropical systems, and winter cold fronts have all spun up tornadoes.

Some of those storms have been genuinely dangerous. On March 2, 1980, an F3 tornado tore a 7.8-mile path up to 500 yards wide, killing one person, injuring 33, and causing $27.5 million in property damage. Decades earlier, on June 18, 1959, an F3 tracked 12.7 miles and injured 77 people, and on April 10, 1956, an F3 injured 20 along a 7.8-mile path of its own.

Tornadoes here follow South Florida's twin rhythms. The summer wet season brings brief touchdowns from sea-breeze storms and tropical weather: on September 28, 2022, an EF2 ran 6.98 miles and injured two people, part of a spate of tornadoes in the area during those late-September days. The cool season carries its own risk, driven by potent fronts: an F2 on February 3, 1998, stayed on the ground for 21 miles, and February 16, 2016, brought a flurry of tornadoes, among them EF1s. On October 19, 2011, an EF2 caused $4 million in damage along a 1.11-mile path.

Many touchdowns near Lauderhill are brief and weak, but the dates above are a reminder that this corner of Florida can produce far worse.
