Lauderdale Lakes sits in the flat, densely built heart of Broward County, and its tornado dates tell a distinctly South Florida story: many touchdowns fall in the June-through-September wet season, while others arrive with the squall lines of winter and early spring.
Both sides of the calendar have produced serious tornadoes here. An F3 struck on March 2, 1980, tracking 7.8 miles with a path up to 500 yards wide; it killed 1 person, injured 33, and caused $27.5 million in property damage. An F3 on June 18, 1959 carved a 12.7-mile path and injured 77 people, and an F3 on April 10, 1956 injured 20 along a 7.8-mile track of its own. In the cool season of 1998, an F2 on February 3 stayed on the ground for 21 miles.
The modern era has added chapters of its own. An EF2 on October 19, 2011 caused $4 million in damage along a path just over a mile long, and an EF2 on September 28, 2022 injured 2 people on a track of nearly seven miles.
