Largo sits at the heart of Florida's Pinellas peninsula, with the Gulf of Mexico a few miles to the west and Tampa Bay to the east. Its tornadoes follow the area's rhythms: brief, weak touchdowns during the June-through-August thunderstorm season, and stronger storms arriving with spring squall lines, autumn systems, and cool-season fronts.
The area has experienced violent tornadoes. An F4 struck on April 15, 1958, injuring 7 along a short but 300-yard-wide track. On April 4, 1966, an F4 carved a 135.8-mile path through the region, killing 11 and injuring 530, while an F2 tracked through the area the same day. An F3 hit on May 4, 1978, killing 3 and injuring 94. On October 3, 1992, an F3 killed 3 and injured 75 along a 2.6-mile path up to 500 yards wide, and an F2 that same day killed 1.
More recent seasons have brought damaging tornadoes as well. An EF2 on December 16, 2020 tracked 13.11 miles and caused $16,000,000 in property damage, and an EF2 on October 12, 2023 traveled 4.97 miles, accompanied by weaker tornadoes that day. Activity has continued, with an EF1 touching down on June 25, 2025 and an EF0 on September 25, 2025.
