About Tornadoes in Lakeside

This overview was written July 29, 2026. The tornado counts and notable-event figures elsewhere on this page reflect the latest data and may differ from this summary.

Lakeside lies in Clay County in northeast Florida, just south of Orange Park between Doctors Lake and the St. Johns River, and its tornado history follows the two rhythms of Florida weather: cool-season fronts that can spin up strong tornadoes, and warm-season storms, including hurricane-season systems, that produce briefer touchdowns.

The cool months have brought powerful tornadoes. On February 7, 1971, an F3 carved a 13.1-mile path up to 200 yards wide and caused $275,000 in damage, while F2 tornadoes the same day left one person injured. An F2 on January 22, 1972 injured four people along a short track, and on February 2, 1996 an F0 killed one person while an F2 cut a six-mile swath the same day. EF1 tornadoes returned on December 24, 2020, and again on February 4, 2024.

Warm-season tornadoes here tend to be weaker, though hardly harmless. On May 12, 1974, an F2 tracked 17.5 miles through the area and injured one person, while a second F2 that day injured two more. Tornadoes touched down on September 5, 6, and 7, 2004, and again on September 26 and 27 of that year. On June 11, 2001, an F0 with a path of just 0.1 miles killed one person, and an EF0 touched down as recently as May 29, 2025.
