Lake Mary sits in Seminole County between Orlando and Sanford, near the middle of the Florida peninsula, where two very different kinds of tornado weather converge. Summer sea-breeze and tropical-season storms tend to produce brief, weak touchdowns — EF0 and EF1 tornadoes spun up around the area on June 6 and 7, 2020, and another EF0 followed on June 6, 2024 — while the area's deadly and destructive tornadoes have repeatedly arrived with cool-season squall lines.
An F2 on January 28, 1973 injured 16 people along a 2.7-mile path. F3 tornadoes crossed the area on February 23, 1998, one killing 3 people and injuring 70 along an 18-mile track, another killing 13 and injuring 36. An EF3 that struck on February 2, 2007 killed 13 people and injured 51 as it tracked 26.03 miles, cutting a swath up to 450 yards wide and causing $98,000,000 in property damage.
