Hillsborough County sits astride the meeting ground of the Gulf and Atlantic sea breezes, and Lake Magdalene, in the lake-dotted suburbs north of Tampa, lies squarely within that zone. On warm afternoons the Gulf breeze pushes inland and collides with air drifting west from the Atlantic side of the peninsula, a convergence that can spin up quick, shallow tornadoes with little warning. The cool season carries its own danger: jet-stream troughs, sharpened during El Niño winters, sweep squall lines across Tampa Bay that occasionally produce intense tornadoes after dark, while landfalling tropical systems supply yet another source of rotation.
The archive assembled by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center shows this threat reaching across generations of area residents. On April 4, 1966, an F4 tornado tore a 135.8-mile path across the peninsula, killing 11 people and injuring 530. Those who remembered that day saw an F3 strike on May 4, 1978, killing 3 people and injuring 94. Their children witnessed the F3 of October 3, 1992, which killed 3 people and injured 75 as it cut a 2.6-mile swath.
